View original post here: http://www.kioskmarketplace.com/article/182218/PatientPad-kiosk-co-gets-7-5M-in-Series-B-funding

Digital Assent, the Atlanta company behind the PatientPad self-service patient check-in and education solution, announced that it has received $7.5 million in a Series B funding round.

The lead investors were Sanan Private Equity, the BIP Opportunities Fund and Buckhead Investment Partners (BIP). Imlay Investments and BLH Venture Partners, who led the Series A funding earlier this year, also contributed.

“We are pleased to receive this investment and validation from Sanan Private Equity and BIP, along with our existing investors, who clearly recognize the rapidly growing market opportunity we are addressing,” Digital Assent President and CEO Andrew Ibbotson said in the announcement. “Since launching PatientPad, the demand has been tremendous. It’s now available in doctor’s offices across half of the nation and this funding will help us realize our potential even faster.”

The PatientPad is a wireless touch-screen solution that automates the patient check-in process and delivers targeted health information and advertising to interested patients while they sit in their healthcare provider’s waiting room, exam room or treatment room.

This funding will fuel expansion of the company’s sales, marketing and product development efforts, the company said. Since January, the company has sold nearly 1,500 PatientPads to 175 practices in 25 states to help streamline the patient check-in process. Ibbotson expects coast-to-coast coverage before the end of the year.

“Digital Assent’s rapid growth — supported by an adoption rate north of 90 percent — is very impressive considering the company secured its Series A funding just a few months ago. Clearly this solution is one that is fulfilling a growing marketplace need,” Sanan Private Equity Managing Director Chemain Sanan said in the announcement.

Digital Assent will also use the funding for near-term product enhancements including point-of-care and group coupon offerings delivered via the company’s new PatientCoupons deals service, the company said, allowing physicians to offer cost-saving incentives on current or future elective products, services and procedures.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Palazzo resort in Vegas recently installed an electronic kiosk that lets people write letters to American troops. The letters will be delivered to the local USO chapter for distribution.

Doug Bradford, director of the USO Las Vegas center at McCarran International Airport, told the newspaper the Palazzo’s letter-writing kiosk was a welcome effort.

“Messages that come from home really mean a lot to our troops who are in a war zone, because it shows them that people still support them,” he said.

The USO will distribute some letters to troops who are passing through the airport on their way either to deployments or to home. Most of the letters will be included in care packages sent to the troops.

A municipal court kiosk is now set up in the court lobby on the second floor at 214 Southeast 8th street next to TPAC.

The kiosk has a touch screen and keyboard so patrons can access frequently asked questions about cases, and make payments using several different credit cards.

The kiosk cost $4000 and was purchased due to a reduction of nearly 18 percent of court staff over the past two budget years.

If the kiosk is popular the court will consider purchasing more in additional locations.

See the original post here: http://www.custodiecautelari.net/an-in-depth-look-at-the-future-of-jail-kiosk-bail-bonds

Competing Fees.

For awhile now,
there has been a huge shift toward bail bonds companies offering not
only payment plans, but little to no upfront down payments and interest. Much
like other industries, such as law firms, doctor offices, etc, it is not
difficult to have clients simply not afford their service unless the business is
willing to take additional financial risks and offer flexible payment options.
Smarter credit card users may realize once they factor in how much they would
pay in residual interest, even credit card bonds have their downsides. While
also becoming subject to credit card late fees, the payment options bail bonds
companies offer start to look rather enticing.

Although in-house kiosk
fees are only 7%, a decent amount less than the 10% to 15% bail agents must
charge, it’s a fee needed to be paid in full; often an amount more than a
defendant can afford. For small non-felony bonds this might not apply, but would
the bail industry really prefer someone remain detained in jail for hours,
sometimes overnight, so they can charge a $100 minimum fee? The answer is
hopefully No.

Disguised Online Threat.

Perhaps
these kiosks might affect small mom and pop businesses, but there is still
plenty of time before this option is made available to all jails. A larger
threat for small businesses is the relatively recent developments of bail bonds
companies hiring aggressive search engine and social media marketing services.
Driving into any city, one is not hard pressed to find a bail bonds company
especially near jails and court buildings, so the industry appears to be doing
rather well. For example, if just a handful of businesses within a city closed,
largely it would go unnoticed and bail kiosks could hardly be described as a
punishing blow to the industry.

With search engine trends showing an
increase in bail bond related searches, we can expect throughout these next 5
years smaller businesses being driven out due to increasing online competition
rather than to bail kiosks.

There is no shortage of literature describing
how the recession has impacted the bail bonds industry negatively. This can be
seen by the competitive payment plans offered, but the market itself is growing.
The leaders of the industry routinely make 7 figures annually. The amount of
individuals with a bail license writing bonds alone, vastly outweigh the number
of companies with legitimate store-front offices, employees, website, etc. This
is analogous to realtors; you can’t expect that everyone with a real estate
license to compete with large realty companies much like every bail agent can’t
expect to survive the economic and legislative fluctuations all businesses
face.

Defendant Responsibility.

The bail bonds
industry was rooted and remains to be built on responsibility. Bail agents are
paid a fee to make sure defendants appear to court so that they do not have to
stay in jail meanwhile. Bail bonds companies cannot be successful without
adhering to this responsibility and maintaining very low forfeiture (also
failure to appear) rates. If courts allow this responsibility to become lifted
with these credit card bonds, then there will not only be a higher failure to
appear rate, but State costs will rise with having to contract people to
apprehend fugitives. In Nevada for example, there are over 100 Las Vegas bail
bonds companies. Imagine the total addition of responsibility and overhead for
each County to bear if kiosks became widely used.

One way or another,
there will always be a need for a group to take responsibility. For this reason,
credit card kiosks will more than likely plateau in use and serve only
defendants that have very minor crimes (also misdemeanors). Potentially in the
future what could happen is that bail kiosks are sold to bail bond companies to
manage within jails. This would be analogous to how people are able to readily
purchase DVD kiosks from OEMs and offer the movie rental service as a private
business. The kiosk manufacturer would profit from the sale of hardware vs. the
management of equipment. Of course with bail kiosks provided by jails, there
will always be concern of whether the defendant will appear in court, even for
unintentional reasons. Operationally, this is something the kiosk manufactures
cannot provide and fundamentally law enforcement apprehends fugitives and
suspects on a completely unrelated basis.

Bail Schedule Increase.

For defendants recognized as being a “flight” risk, judges may
impose a higher bail to either (1) indirectly prevent bail being posted because
it becomes unaffordable or (2) make indemnitors so invested into the bond, that
there becomes extra pressure from family or friends to appear in court. If
credit card bail kiosks become widely accepted, the State might impose higher
bail amounts for crimes in the event there was an increase in fugitives. Any
changes like this would most certainly help the bail bonds industry by creating
on average larger bonds to write.

Those who have not needed bail bonds
service may be unaware the fee (also premium) required for some defendants can
be equivalent and sometimes higher than the monthly salaries of your average
doctor or attorney. Not a bad day’s work right? If the State increased the bail
amount for common, smaller crimes, the bail industry could look forward to a
measurable increase in revenue. In addition, the appearance of a crime problem
within a city can be created by the misconduct of even one individual or group.
If the number of fugitives increased due to bail kiosks, surely the potential
for changing the bail schedule for certain offenses would also increase.
However, the County may reduce the number of kiosks or tighten restrictions of
its use to offset a problem before increasing bail amounts. There’s a common
saying, “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix
it.”

Conclusion.

All in all, the advent of new
kiosks providing credit card bail bonds will not significantly change the
business side of the industry as a whole. People with the ability to bail out
quickly should be able to do so because jails are unarguably over crowded with
non-violent offenders. Although the image of the bail bonds industry could use
improvement, it has remained throughout all these years virtually complaint free
as far any failure to provide a valuable, around the clock service with
incredible payment flexibility. Occasionally you read or hear stories of
bondsman soliciting service illegally, but not at such a high frequency as to
raise wide-spread national recognition, such as the mortgage loan modification
scams of 2009, which made headlines weekly. As for now, what the future holds is
only speculation, but those in the bail bonds industry should not fear things
changing overnight. For the most part, County credit card bail bonds will not
change the industry as a whole and with some outcomes potentially being helpful,
concerns should settle as time passes.

New Zealand’s Deployment of Christchurch International Airport’s check-in hall and kiosks are underway and will soon unlock space for hurried passengers to locate their planes and move to nearby check-in counters whether they are on a flight to Hokitika or Paris, according to Stuff. About 70 percent of the project is done, and the rest will take until September 2012, Airport Chief Executive Jim Boult, said in the story. The total cost of the terminal development will be $237 million, with the building program on budget and funded through the airport’s bank facilities, Boult said. The owners Christchurch City Holdings Ltd (75 per cent) and the Government (25 percent) will be watching returns from the investment closely. The new project was designed in consultation with airlines and border agencies to better fit international regulations. The integrated check-in hall has 58 check-in counters as well as numerous self-service kiosks. Boult said while an integrated check-in would not work along the lines of a Heathrow Airport that gets 50 million passengers a year, it’s great for an airport the size of Christchurch. Travelers can now use a vareity of self-service options, he said. They can use the Internet to get a home-printed boarding pass, a kiosk for check-in at the airport or a mobile check-in if they hold no luggage. Older people who want to talk to an airline representative can still do so, Boult said. “For the likes of myself flying down to Queenstown on a turboprop now, I can leave my office five minutes before boarding, walk down there and enter the regional lounge, park my backside in the little Koru express Air New Zealand have got there. When they call the flight I walk out and flash my bar code and I’m gone.” Phen375 Review

The Miri City Council (MCC) in Sarawak, Malaysia plans to set up bill payment kiosks throughout the area.

According to The Star, Mayor Lawrence Lai said the kiosks would help overcome congestion faced at the only one-stop service center the public uses to pay overdue parking fees or other council services.

“We have already submitted a proposal on the plan to the ministry and we are expecting a response soon,” he said.

He said a group of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) officers had already set up similar payment kiosks 10 years ago within its jurisdiction and that they have proven to be efficient.

Meanwhile, the sharing of knowledge and experience between MCC and DBKU has made the former more effective in serving the public.

“DBKU has undergone more than 20 years of hard work to become the modern capital city that it is today. Its well-planned management has earned DBKU the first prize in the Chief Minister’s Quality Award.”

According to Lai, the cooperation between the councils included a study tour of Kuching by MCC officials to learn about its sewage and computerized parking systems which would be implemented there soon.

The parking system would centralize the payment of fees, overtime parking fees and compound fees and would be linked to a main server to speed up payments and save costs, he said.

“Once the system is implemented, the parking booths will function as fee collection points and the public can make payments without being caught in traffic,” Lai said.

Nearly three quarters of Australian consumers wanted their shopping experiences to have some type of technology, including in-store kiosks, mobile phones and the Web, according to a 2009-10 IBM study that surveyed more than 35,000 consumers globally.

Inside Retailing reported that consumers said they prefer to use kiosks to review product features and obtain product information. They use mobile phones to locate the nearest store as well as compare prices and check whether a product is in stock, and they use websites to compare prices, print coupons and read and write product reviews.

They also use social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to connect with other shoppers, and the opinions of others influence their purchasing decisions. A third of consumers polled, largely Generations Y and Z, said they were likely to follow a retailer on a social network but expect some form of value exchange with the retailer in return.

The study also found that Australian shoppers believe retailers’ No. 1 focus should be offering better promotions and prices, followed by making product improvements and, finally, providing better customer service.

More specifically, they want personalized promotions and knowledgeable store employees who are willing to help during the shopping process. More than half of Australians surveyed by IBM said they were willing to spend more money with a retailer that addressed these needs.

Useful kiosk companies must be able to give kiosk electronics that is certainly durable, protected and contains a smooth finish. The software furnished by the kiosk supplier for the kiosk really should be examined and also stop illegal adjustment. Buyers will get back to a kiosk if only certain of constantly even operations. The company should guarantee that the finish end user operations are as trouble free as you can. For this, kiosk companies must be able to give upkeep expert services for the electronics along with the application at standard time intervals.

As kiosks are generally aimed at supplying expert services to consumers, a frequent plan of precautionary upkeep for the two hardware and software really should be integrated.

The standard and popular features of the two apparatus and repair varies from supplier to supplier. So, ways as being a close look at purchaser recommendations, a talk with present prospects who will vouch for their linki sponsorowane high quality etcetera is critical for analyzing kiosk companies.

Different facets like high quality guarantee techniques, assurance insurance and trouble shooting volumes really should be in contrast and contrasted to get to a decision about the overall performance of a kiosk supplier.

Getting a complete type of one more merchandise is a superb technique of analyzing each of the features that you are having. Require demos of kiosks that conduct comparable features as you to secure a relative examination.

A number of small segmented retailers make up the provision chain of kiosk companies. Some self-sufficient owners generally attach with greater owners. This assures them a steady stream of business. A mindful examination of one’s requirements is critical prior to deciding in a particular kiosk supplier. If you are have to have stipulates a particular types of kiosk, say for on the internet ticketing or maybe a snapshot kiosk, it will be far better to deal with a supplier who specializes in that range.

Leicester, U.K.-based Working Solutions is taking a novel, mix-and-match approach to its digital signage and kiosk software.

Rather than just offering different levels of functionality pre-packaged at different price points, Working Solutions is offering a smorgasbord of plug-ins from which clients can pick and choose. The company is also working with third-party providers to create new plug-ins and added functionality.

Working Solutions, well known in Europe, is working to expand its reach and brand awareness in the United States, Working Solutions CEO Neil Farr said in a recent telephone interview from Leicester.

The company has been crafting new versions of its workhorse software solution, Acquire, meant to allow clients to fit the solution to their needs, rather than the other way around.

Clients wanting the full range of options can still buy the Acquire Premier Editor Suite, but the company also offers Acquire Editor, Acquire Hybrid, Acquire SOLO and the Signage2Go solutions.

These solutions offer the usual range of different levels of functionality, from standalone to networked, and even the ability to create a hybrid SaaS/signage application solution.

But perhaps most interesting, the company offers the ability to buy or rent the basic version of the Editor suite and then purchase, create or have created plug-ins as needed.

“It gives you the ability to say you’ve got a technology … that allows you to basically say in three months time when I want to do something extra I’m not then artificially restrained by the what the functionality is in the solution I purchased,” Farr said. “It means that you can go ahead and either choose one of the plug-ins and start utilizing it, or if there’s something custom that you want developed you can either develop it yourselves or, because it’s a plug-in driven system, we can build a plug in custom for you. So its very, very flexible.”

The company also has been partnering with third parties to create new plug-ins and add-ons for its software suites, after deciding it could either build them in-house or work with partners who are already experts in that particular area. Working Solutions has partnered with third-party solution providers like AccuWeather, for weather updates; 3D Impact Media for dual 3-D and 2-D content on screens; Nemo-Q, for queuing solutions; and Quividi, for its audience-measurement package, allowing deployers to adjust their content depending on who’s standing in front of the screen.

Working Solutions had in the past created its own facial-recognition audience tracking platform, but working with a third party whose expertise is in that field leverages that expertise but also provides another level of assurance, Farr said. The software is used to adjust content but also to provide reporting stats to network customers, and having a third party’s software used for that purpose lends added credence and validity to the reporting, he said.

“If we’re all doing that ourselves, well we do digital signage, of course we’re going to say you’ve got 10 million people looking at it; whereas these third parties are more believable because that’s their focus. If they make up their figures then they’ll be out of business tomorrow,” he said. “So it adds value, not just because it creates an easier-to-use solution, but because the features are something you can believe in and trust in.”

Kiosks are providing prisoners with services at the Colorado State Penitentiary, which holds some of the most dangerous criminals in the state, according to Government Computer News.

The kiosks are designed to bring services to the prisoners instead of guards having to move them from their cells.

“These guys are locked up 23 hours a day,” John Jubic, the Department of Corrections’ end-user solutions manager, said in the story. “Any time we move these prisoners, it takes two to six guards to do it. That was the driving force behind what we are doing.”

Via an IP network, the department is delivering basic services, such as TV, telephone and visitation services, to hardened kiosks in each cell. Each prisoner is entitled to some privileges, including virtual visits from visitors’ centers outside the prison, tailored to the prisoner’s disciplinary status. A high-speed network delivers many of those virtual visits to the cell without the risk or hassle of moving the prisoner, bringing visitors into the complex or delivering materials to a cell.

A server that links the department’s Lightweight Directory Access Protocol directory to a prison management system is critical to managing access privileges at kiosks in prisoners’ cells.

The RadiantOne Virtual Directory Server is “a single access point where the application gets all of its information,” said Ulrich Schulz, a Radiant Logic systems engineer.

The virtual directory server creates a single profile from multiple existing resources, in this case a Novell eDirectory and Informix database used for authenticating prisoners and authorizing their access to in-cell services.

“We shield the complexity of different services, protocols and attributes from the application,” Schulz said.

Blockbuster, which was recently acquired by satellite operator DISH Network, announced today that it’s lowering the prices of thousands of videos to compete with kiosks, including redbox and BLOCKBUSTER Express kiosks owned by NCR.

Starting Friday, thousands of the video stores’ selections will be 99 cents. Newer movies — many of which can’t be rented at kiosks or from Netflix until 28 days after Blockbuster offers them for rent — will cost $2.99 for the first day. Other new releases will be $1.99 for the first day — 99 cents after that.

“Our customers are seeking a better value — we’ve answered with new pricing and the flexibility of single day rentals,” Michael Kelly, president of Blockbuster, said in the announcement.

The “like” kiosks deployed last month at RFID Journal Live in Orlando Fla., showed that combining RFID and Social Media allows users to interact at the time of an event.

“The success of using RFID tags and chips and Facebook together is exactly why every mobile phone will have an RFID device in it in the next three to five years,” Patrick Sweeney, whose company, ODIN, designed the kiosks, said in his blog. “The smart companies will be the ones using UHF RFID to get the extended read range, so that guy doing a test ride at 200 mph can have his picture taken automatically and posted to his Facebook page before he gets out of the car.”

Attendees at tradeshows using the social media kiosks receive cards or bracelets with RFID chips or Keyfobs with RFID tags that allow them to interact through ODIN’s EasyConnect Software built for Facebook.

ASHTABULA —

With a little cooperation from the hardware supplier, several information kiosks should be in place at Ashtabula County tourism hot spots by mid-summer.

Scott Becker, president of the Civic Development Corporation, and Ken Johnson, general manager of Conneaut Telephone Co., are demonstrating a prototype of the kiosk and its content, which was developed by Conneaut Telephone for CDC. The kiosk provides an electronic gateway for information about the county, which draws on the Ashtabula County Convention and Visitors Bureau database.

The target audience is for tourists who are already in the county and want to find places to eat, stay or be entertained. They can learn about the county’s 18 covered bridges, 20 wineries, two state parks, numerous museums and other attractions by tapping the appropriate icons on the 22-inch touch-screen display.

The kiosk project is part of a five-year $700,000 CDC com-

mitment to enhance economic development through tourism, Becker said. Mark Winchell, Visitors Bureau executive director, said the kiosks ultimately will mean more tourism dollars will be spent in the county.

“This is a tool that gets the money out of people’s pockets once they get here,” he said. “This is a tool that really legitimizes the tourism product and gets those last dollars from (tourists) before they leave here.”

Initially, the kiosks will be placed at Ashtabula Towne Square, the Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake, SPIRE Institute, an Ashtabula Harbor location, the Ohio Department of Transportation visitor center on Interstate 90 (Conneaut) and the Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge overlook.

“There will be a few mobile units that can be taken to festivals, such as Wine and Walleye,” Becker said. “You have a lot of visitors in town, and they might say, ‘What else is there to do?’”

Johnson said the kiosk display is not meant to replace the Visitors Bureau’s website or mirror the information there.

“We’re not talking about (reaching) people who are sitting at home on their (computer), planning a trip,” Johnson said.

While making use of Internet connections for updating and linking to the websites of businesses that pay for that option, the kiosk’s content is contained on an internal hard drive, which will be updated daily. Becker said the plan is to delegate the daily administration and updating tasks to the Visitors Bureau once all the bugs are worked out of the system.

Johnson said the kiosks will come in several configurations, depending upon the venue. The mobile unit will be on a pedestal; others may be mounted on the wall or a desk. There is no audio in the content so they won’t interfere with the venue’s ambiance.

The plan was to have the kiosks in place by Memorial Day, but hardware delivery delays have pushed implementation to July 4.

Johnson said one of the biggest challenges of the project has been to sort out and categorize the myriad things that a tourist can do in Ohio’s largest county. He compared the site to an ice field, where there many peaks sticking out of the water but under the surface they are interconnected.

Becker said CDC has been demonstrating the kiosk around the county and receiving feedback from various audiences.

“I think we’re going to do a little bit more of that. Once we get it out there, we’ll get a tremendous amount of feedback on how we can make it better,” Becker said.

4/5/11 – Cherryh Butler

Kiosks allow consumers to check in for flights and into hotels, buy groceries and rent DVDs — all without human interaction. So, it comes as no surprise that the porn and self-service industries have finally collided to create the PleasureXone kiosk, which allows users to browse adult film titles and download them onto USB storage devices.

Pardon me if I don’t take advantage of the opportunities for puns while I employ such terms as “self-service” and “hard drive.” This is a family-friendly website.

According to a press release, California-based MindfulEye Inc. developed the kiosks with portability and privacy in mind. They allow consumers to purchase USB drives, external drives and “adult products” 24-hours a day, 365-days a year with complete privacy. Movies cost between .99 and $5.95 and can be played on personal computers, televisions, or a specially equipped gaming device, and unlike Internet-based companies, the MindfulEye systems deliver the product to the consumer within seconds.

The deployment of 2,000 kiosks to liquor stores, truck stops, lingerie stores and adult stores is already underway.

Keeping away minors
Although the kiosks, which are pink and purple and feature photos of lingerie-clad women or adult products, are deployed in places minors don’t often frequent, I assumed parents would be worried about their kids stumbling onto the content.

However, there’s no need to worry, said Bryan Ross, a managing partner of MindfulEye. Minors are kept from using the kiosks through the company’s driver’s license authorization process.

“So (there’s) no chance of minors (using them) unless they steal their parents cc and dl. We can’t be responsible for dishonest people,” he said.

And even if a kid were to be hanging out while someone else was using the machine, Ross said he still wouldn’t get an eye-full. The kiosks have no pornographic previews.

Is it a good business model?
Keeping kids from seeing adult content is obviously an important part of the discussion, but I was even more interested as to why Ross thought his kiosks made good business sense. Did he really expect people to stand in front of kiosks displaying sexy photos that might as well as say “Porn for sale”? It isn’t exactly anonymous or private – people will obviously know why you’re there.

Ross disagreed.

“We believe that standing in front of our kiosk for 20 seconds while waiting for a movie to download is more discreet than perusing hundreds of DVDs that have large, colorful, images that are far more provocative than anything we show,” he said.

However, I can’t imagine anything more discreet than ordering and watching adult content at home. Although Netflix is clear on its no-porn stance, after an interesting Google search I found a few companies that rent porn via mail or streaming. Also, everyone knows there’s a lot of free porn online, which begs the question, “Why porn kiosks?”

It’s a privacy issue, according to Ross, who reminded me that although it may seem more discreet to use an online or mailing service, neither system is private.

“We are completely private,” he said. “There is no trace of what you are looking at, renting or buying.”

True, unless you’re worried about store employees or other consumers seeing you use them, but then on the other hand if they’re hanging out by the kiosks, then they’re probably there for the same reason.

To deploy or not to deploy?
Obviously, most retailers won’t ever deploy PleasureXone kiosks. (Can you imagine gas stations or fast-food restaurants deploying a porn box next to the redbox?) But does it even make sense for MindfulEye’s aforementioned target audience – truck stops, lingerie stores, liquor stores and adult stores – to have them onsite?

Yes, according to Ross, who expects the machines to be profitable for retailers in those industries. Each kiosk contract is customized for its location and could be either a revenue share with the retailer, a rental of the unit or could be based on another mutually agreeable term, he said. Business owners can order kiosks off-the-shelf or have them custom built to meet their needs and specifications. They can even be designed to allow for co-branding opportunities.

Ross said the company is now accepting orders for second-quarter delivery. It will be interesting to see if this business venture pays off. There have always been skeptics when it comes to industries adopting new technologies, and just as more-mainstream retailers often say their customers use a variety of platforms – kiosks, mobile phones, websites and brick-and-mortar stores – to research and buy goods, maybe porn connoisseurs will embrace yet another way to get porn.

The hassle of standing in never-ending queues to purchase platform tickets may soon be a thing of the past for Indian travelers.

Accoring to the The Hindu, The Mysore Division of the South Western Railway is likely to introduce multi-functional kiosks with an additional facility to dispense platform tickets at the city station.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Anup Dayanand Sadhu told the newspaper that the initiative followed a decision by the Railway Board to phase out the standalone coin-based ticket vending machines.

“The board wants to replace these machines with an integrated system that will enable us to account for the sale of platform tickets in real time,” Dayanand sai.

The regional office of the Centre for Railway Information Systems [CRIS] is hosting a prototype and is waiting approval from CRIS headquarters in New Delhi, according to the story.

The model integrates platform ticket dispensation services with a complaint system, allowing passengers to register grievances. The kiosks will also be connected to the centralized National Train Enquiry System to provide travel information to passengers.

“The Mysore Division suggested integration of the three services. This will not only save manpower but will provide the public a hassle-free system for purchasing platform tickets,” Dayanand said.

Dubai travelers can not only check in for flights via kiosk, they can also make visa queries, print visas and book flights at self-service facilities launched by Flydubai and the Department of Naturalisation and Residency Dubai (DNRD).

According to a press release, the facility launched today at Arabian Travel Market (ATM), will be available at six DNRD kiosks strategically placed around Dubai, including Dubai Terminal 2, The Ministry of Labour and the Twar Center, with plans for additional machines to be placed in the city’s malls in the future.

“The new service is in line with the Dubai Government’s vision for the future of the Government (e-government), and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision of making the very best use of technology services within Dubai,” said H.E. Mohammed Al Marri, director General of DNRD.

Flydubai’s self-service machines at Dubai International Airport utilize touchscreens with pin-code visa scanners and printers that connect to DNRD staff, should customers need assistance.

To book Flydubai flights, the kiosks link directly to Flydubai.com, where customers can make bookings, select optional extras, including checked baggage, or a seat with extra legroom, then complete payment using cash or credit/debit card.

This week’s roundup of new accessories for the iPad answers the burning questions: What if I tried to use my new tablet as a frying pan? Just how exotic can a wall-mounting kit get? How do I use my iPad as a wah-wah pedal without leaving footprints? Read on for all the answers.

Gear4

If the iPad accessories in your life just don’t have enough of that Sharper Image feel for your tastes, UK’s Gear4 may have the answer: the $30 iPan. This package features an otherwise-useless pan handle that slides into the iPad’s dock-connector port. Download the forthcoming free iPan app, and images of sizzling eggs will appear on the screen, making it look as though you’re frying up breakfast on your iPad. (Gear4 is pitching the iPan, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as a “weight-loss” product, claiming you’ll subliminally convince yourself you’ve had a great breakfast.) The $30 device is not yet available in the U.S.

Gravity Switch

There are plenty of accessories that let you mount your tablet to the wall, but few are as fancy–and pricey–as the $349 iBracket from Gravity Switch. The mount weighs 9.7 pounds, thanks largely to four built-in speakers designed to pump out sound. The device comes in more than a dozen varieties of aluminum finish–though custom finishes and designs are also available–and appears to be aimed primarily at app developers who want to show off their wares at trade shows. The iBracket is available for sale now.

II:XX Stands

The music-making capabilities of the iPad 2 have already been well-publicized, but II:XX takes the concept a step farther by turning your tablet into a wah-wah pedal. The $135 iWah mounts your iPad 2 on an aluminum pedal stand, next to a dedicated foot pedal, then, when used with compatible apps, utilizes the tablet’s accelerometer and gyroscope to let guitar players control and record effects on the device. You can position your iPad in either portrait or landscape orientation.

iTab_Grip

The Australian company behind the $50 iTab_Grip has announced a new model for the iPad 2. Like the original, the forthcoming device features a clear-plastic snap-on case with a hub on the back. You hold your iPad using a ring attached to the hub, which can rotate for portrait or landscape viewing. The device is expected “soon.”

Meglio

Designer Salman Paracha’s $50 Meglio is similar to the iTab_Grip, but smaller–a snap-on grip fits only across the middle of your iPad 2, in either portrait or landscape mode. You’re left with a grip on the back for comfortable holding. Paracha is aiming to raise $15,000 via Kickstarter to begin production on the device.

PadPivot

Seattle designer Jim Young recently completed a Kickstarter campaign of his own to begin production on the PadPivot, a lap and desk stand for the iPad 2 and other tablets. The stand features a grip plate that fits on your thigh or can be placed on a tabletop. During the Kickstand campaign, a pledge of $25 qualified as a pre-order of the device, but no current pricing information is available. Young is currently taking signups for the next round of pre-orders, with a goal of shipping this spring.

USB Fever

USB Fever has launched two new products that support the iPad 2 and various other Apple products. The $13 30 Pin Dock Male to Female Adapter lets you place your encased iPad, iPhone, or iPod in a dock-cradle accessory without removing the case. The $25 External Portable Battery–also compatible with all dock-connector-equipped i-devices–provides up to three hours of backup power for your tablet (more for smaller i-devices), and includes an LED indicator to let you know how much power remains in the battery.

UI Stencils

The $25 iPad Dry Erase Board from UI Stencils isn’t really an iPad 2 accessory. Rather, it’s a nifty little piece of equipment that might serve as the foundation for a cool iPad app in the future. This dry-erase tablet features an exact replica of the iPad’s screen with a 20-pixel grid. You can take notes on it, or, even better, use it to plot the user interface on your own app.

Read the original: http://www.solaraloftsnews.com/uncategorized/internet-kiosk-business-opportunities-scam

For the last several years there were many TV commercials and Internet ads about Internet kiosk business opportunities. The idea is that any person can purchase one or more kiosks, install them in public places, sell Internet access plus some other products and make good profit.

This sounds like a good plan for many people. Some companies also successfully implemented such ideas and do make some profit. However whether this opportunity can be profitable for inexperienced entrepreneur-wannabes is very questionable.

According to a number of recent publications and lawsuits most of such business opportunity ventures turned out to be scams. In this article I will try to summarize facts about the Internet Kiosk business opportunity.

The following arguments (the arguments can either be true, very subjective or simply lies) are provided by Internet kiosk business opportunity sellers.

* Many people need Internet access wherever they go. People would like to pay for public Internet access.

* There are many potentially profitable locations airports, malls, truck stops, nightclubs, hair salons, etc

* People made a lot of money out of ATMs and pay phones, now is the time to profit from Internet kiosk business.

* You are just in the right place and in the right time! You are lucky to be among the first who take this incredible opportunity. Other people are already making $1000-$3000 a month. You must be not a smart businessperson if you do not take advantage of this opportunity right now!

* Investment amount ($7000-$15000 per kiosk) is very reasonable and will be paid off in a matter of 1-2 years.

* You must act now in order to secure the best locations in your area. Or other people will take this business.

* Quotes from trusted sources also support the idea:

o “250,000 to 300,000 terminals will be in service throughout the U.S. by 2005.” – Frost & Sullivan

o “By the end of 2005, 71% of all users will access the Internet via an appliance such as a terminal.” – eTForecasts

o “High Speed Public Access Internet Terminals may soon become as common in airports and shopping malls as pay telephones and vending machines USA Today

o “Public Internet Access Terminals will replace not only pay phones but also banking machines, because they will offer capabilities as well as all the other highway applications, from sending and receiving messages to scanning maps and buying tickets. Access to terminals will be essential, and available everywhere” -Bill Gates

Is there is anything wrong with the opportunity? The reality makes the opportunity look different from what is being advertised:

* Not that many people actually need or want to use Internet Kiosks. There is an increasing number of other ways (wireless services, mobile phone devices, etc) to connect to the Internet including free options offered at many places such as hotels and coffee shops. Another reason is security. A responsible person may not want to type their private information on a public Internet terminal.

* Equipment price is usually too high (100-300% more than it should be), additional expenses are underestimated (or simply not mentioned), and potential profits are highly overestimated.

* It s very likely that inexperienced people cannot operate this or any other business without high risk and losses. Kiosk equipment is much more complex than regular vending machines, therefore regular people can not be qualified for this business.

* Once equipment is bought, people are not able to get locations. When they use locator companies, many locators cannot provide good locations or do not provide any location at all after taking money for their service.

The actual Internet Kiosk Business opportunity business is to make money for the opportunity sellers. They make money by selling overpriced equipment while promising unrealistic returns. If a person or company is trying to get into the Internet kiosk business, they do not need any help from business opportunity sellers. There are many kiosk manufacturers, trade shows and conferences where one can get objective information about the business and industry. I believe there is no such thing as a turnkey business opportunity. Only a qualified person or company with extensive research and experience might be able to succeed in the Internet kiosk business.

Milan Transport Agency is employing Scala-powered digital signage to Jump-start its renewal Project.

The Milan Transport Agency (ATM) and the City of Milan, on a mission to modernize both the underground and above-ground public transportation network, has plans to replace all vehicles with more environmentally friendly versions, improve transportation efficiency, and increase safety and comfort for travelers.

ATM turned to Scala Certified Partner M-Cube, to design an integrated digital network for this high-profile project.

The new network spans 42-inch LCD displays sealed in unbreakable glass located in underground train station mezzanines. The network communicates ATM corporate messages, network service updates, alternate routes and emergency messages.

There is also a panic button connected to the mezzanine monitors to provide default messages in case of an emergency. A push of the button will alert the ATM control room, which will then manage the messaging to stations affected by the situation or the entire network.

At the above-ground transportation stations of the airport bus line San Babila/Linate, M-Cube has implemented information poles with two 26-inch LED monitors per pole, providing visibility from all sides. The monitors have been optically bonded to ensure visibility in all weather conditions and direct sunlight. These displays provide information about the position of the bus on its route, and arrival time at the stop where the traveler is viewing the screen.

ATM’s communications offices needed a digital signage network that could live up to all of the information tasks needed, while communicating over an extensive network and one that was able to integrate existing system functionality. In addition, it wanted a network to serve as a communication tool between its staff and headquarters. The choice, we are told, was Scala because of its reliability and flexibility.

Roberto Carreri, ATM project manager, says, “Because of its flexibility to integrate with our existing databases and current application environment, the Scala system enables ATM to communicate important information in an easy-to-understand format, using captivating graphics, while distributing multiple messages simultaneously over a complex network without any extra development work.”

M-Cube is focused on the delivery of hardware, software and services. It is dedicated to the broadcast of multimedia contents and specifically tailored for large commercial organizations, such as in-store audio-video communication systems, displays, interactive kiosks, and multi-media totems.

Rite on the Button, a company that provides customized electronic concierge solutions, will soon install interactive touch-screen kiosks around Ventura, Calif. According to VCStar.com, the kiosks will help visitors find information about entertainment, restaurants and events.

The company is currently working with Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach Hotel, Embassy Suites, Ventura Amtrak rail station, Ventura Harbor and the Ventura Visitors and Convention Bureau to deploy the machines within the next few weeks.

Herb Morris, president and CEO of Rite on the Button, said the kiosks will also be equipped with Wi-Fi, and the company is developing applications for smartphones to allow visitors to access information using their hand-held devices.

“The main thing to guests is to get something more specific to our area, like what wineries are nearby and how to get there,” said Gary Kohler, director of sales and marketing for Crowne Plaza. “It starts off with the basic premise of a visitor’s service introduction to Ventura and from there anything that piques the interest can be put forward.”

One of my first blogs on this site took a realistic glance at the prospect of 2-D bar code adoption in the U.S. In the last few years, brands, publishers and retailers have tested and nibbled around the edges of this technology. There is evidence in a lot of places that key players are now willing to take a bigger bite.

In the recently concluded South by Southwest interactive conference, mobile was at the core of most discussions, and 2D bar codes were employed everywhere from billboards to screens to food wrappers. There was widespread agreement that mobile will be a game changer on many fronts.

It is incumbent upon the kiosk and digital-signage industries to understand how mobile technologies can extend the value of what we design and produce. The 2-D bar code is an evolving tool that we may be called upon to evaluate and integrate.

Mobile bar codes are the “easy button” for connecting to content. They make the static interactive and the tethered mobile. The value for kiosks and digital signage is the ability to take something away from the interaction on your phone. At key points in their educational quest or transaction mobile bar codes give consumers the ability to link to information on the web that can move with them and reconnect them to a brand or retailer later.

As attractive as bar code scanning and instant connectivity appear on the surface, there are challenges with infrastructure, education and execution that we should be conversant about.

Those in the mobile industry like to refer to the complexity of the “ecosystem.” This refers to different codes, different readers, and the lack of uniformity among mobile devices.

Laura Marriott, past president of the Mobile Marketing Association, has said, “The majority of the major players in the 2-D barcode ecosystem are committed to working closely with the standards bodies to help overcome the hurdles to broad-scale market development through collaboration.” For now, we must go to school on the numerous options available.”

In addition to a more uniform infrastructure, there is a need for consumer understanding. We are at the point where publications like USA Today have made mobile bar codes a regular feature; Coach Stores and Macy’s have integrated them into their Spring advertising and in-store marketing campaigns; and giants like Google and eBaby are incorporating them into their applications. These bold moves will accelerate awareness.

Getting consumers to understand and try 2-D bar code scanning is one thing, but ensuring a good user experience is key to the success and longevity of a program. A satisfying interaction can increase loyalty or lead to a sale, while an inferior experience can detract from a brand.

Here are some considerations in marketing with 2-D bar codes:

Know what kinds of mobile devices your target is using. Knowing whether your target is a smart phone user or a feature phone user may dictate your choice of 2-D bar code.

Research what combination of bar code and reader is right for your program. There are many choices of reader applications for open source codes. Providers of proprietary codes couple a bar code with a designated reader.

Think beyond the tactic to the quality of content to which you are linking. Is there an adequate payoff for the time it takes to pause and scan?

Be certain you explain scanning and what it will link to in the medium that activates the scan. There are many examples of well-communicated instructions that can be viewed on the Internet.

Tell consumers where to get a code reader if they don’t have one on their phone. Be aware that not every reader application reads every kind of code.

Consider giving consumers an alternative means of accessing the content. Some marketers have included access via text messaging or a mobile web page in their media.

As 2D bar codes make their way into the mainstream of retail and self-service experience our industry needs to be prepared with information and insight. We aren’t necessarily the players to untangle the infrastructure, but we have a responsibility to strive for a satisfying user experience to the benefit of all involved.

Now more than ever, retailers are focusing on the customer experience at the point-of-sale in order to provide the best service possible to increasingly demanding consumers. Savvy retailers are looking to technology to give the customer control over the checkout experience through self-service kiosks. Not surprisingly, the presence of kiosks in retail locations continues to grow as a way to deliver great customer service and provide a competitive advantage. According to Summit Research Associates, revenue from the sales of hardware, software and integration services in the kiosk industry was just under $374 million at the end of 2008 in North America. By 2011, that number is projected to hit $565 million, a 51 percent increase over 3 years.

While self-checkout kiosks are nothing new to retail, the use of RFID technology is. RFID-equipped checkout solutions can allow companies to provide even more choices and improved service to enhance the customer experience.

Sterling Services for example, a metro Detroit Food Service company, worked with Freedom Shopping and 365 Retail Markets to break new ground creating self-service convenience stores that employ RFID technology. Sterling Services wanted to offer food service to its third-shift employees without affecting first- and second-shift employees’ current cafeteria. In working with 365 Retail Markets to develop and deploy a self-checkout RFID-based kiosk system with item-level tagging, the company created a solution called SmartShop. Adding SmartShop to the cafeteria allowed Sterling to offer employees a much larger variety of products than vending machines with the convenience of 24/7 operations in addition to multiple payment options.

Here’s how it works: Customers bring their items to one of the check-out kiosks. An RFID reader automatically senses the tag-equipped items and totals the costs. Customers then pay with cash or a credit card – all in about six seconds. By creating a more efficient and cost-effective self-checkout experience, Sterling is able to provide its employees with more value and variety.

Sterling uses a Zebra RZ400 printer to print and encode rich information on the RFID inlay of each tag, which gives customers complete information about price, food ingredients and expiration date.

In another example, Charlotte-based specialty bike store Uptown Cycle tapped Digital Retail Solutions and Freedom Shopping to help improve store operations by converting to an RFID system and self-check-out kiosks. In doing so, Uptown Cycle was able to free up personnel to spend more time with high-transaction customers – those buying bicycles – while providing customers who want to make low-transaction purchases, such as energy bars or performance beverages, with options for a speedy checkout rather than making them wait for a sales associate to pay.

The self-service, automation, data collection and tracking capabilities of kiosks utilizing RFID result in increased efficiency and reduced costs for companies, which translate to enhancing the experience of customers.

Customers of Wessex Garage, Douglas can now transact their postal business and top-up their fuel all at one location thanks to the introduction of a self-service Pay and Post kiosk in the premise.

The move is part of a wave of postal kiosks being introduced to provide the public with improved access to postal services particularly early in the morning and after 5.30pm with emphasis on weekend access. The expansion has already seen the introduction of Pay and Post kiosks in the Crosby Hotel and Shoprite, Victoria Road, Douglas.
The new location at the Wessex Garage, Alexander Drive, Douglas will provide customers and residents of the local area with the opportunity to transact their postal business earlier than ever before with early morning opening from 7am and late night closing until 10pm.

The postal kiosks offer postage of letters and small packets, purchase of postage labels and the payment of utility bills (MEA, Manx Telecom, Manx Gas and Government Rates).

Pay and Post kiosks were first trialled in Regent Street Post Office, Douglas in August and 94% of the first 600 customers to use the kiosks rated them as excellent and said they would use them again.

Adrian Christian, of the Wessex Garage said: “We are delighted that Isle of Man Post Office has chosen our premises for their new kiosk. We offer a range of services at the Wessex Garage and our extended opening hours mean that customers can carry out postal transactions at a time that suits them. We hope that local residents will take advantage of having the kiosk so close to their homes.”

Geoff Corkish MBE MHK, Vice Chairman, Isle of Man Post Office said: “I am conscious of the value and need for services provided by the Post Office in our communities. Therefore I am very pleased to see the installation of the very popular postal kiosk being placed in this busy and convenient area of the Wessex Garage, together with long opening hours of accessibility. I very much hope that this facility will meet many of the postal needs of the community.”
